Private Garden
This project involved the renovation of an existing timber villa with a modern extension and pool added to the rear of the building, designed by Jose Gutierrez Architects.  The garden is in three parts; the front flower garden, a narrow pool garden and the lush rear garden for play. The front garden includes an informal carpark and passage to the front door using landings of basalt cobbles set within Pratia. It is planted with a mix of flowering perennials and grasses, presenting a loose and ephemeral planting along the street. The rear garden is a level below the house, comprising a small lawn and a shaded retreat for table tennis under the kitchen, planted with shade tolerant potted plants. The boundary planting is a mix of evergreen NZ native shrubs providing privacy from neighbours and a lush perimeter to the property. The side gardens are narrow passages, one leading to the front door, the other providing access to the pool garden. Bay hedges are used to complete the sense of privacy around the house within a compact space.
