Private Garden
Located in a leafy central suburb of Auckland this project involved construction of a new house, designed by Pattersons Architects and recasting of the garden. The only remnant elements of the former garden were the boundary hedge, a Melia tree and a mature Phoenix palm. A generous lawn and spacious terraces were key components of the brief, leaving relatively little space for planting. The north terrace was carved into creating impactful blocks of woodland planting viewed from the ground floor open-plan living space. The client sought a structured garden with layered planting, rich in texture and shades of green. It is a compact space that offers both a spacious outlook over lawn to tiered hedges and outdoor seating areas immersed in planting. Amelanchier trees offer seasonal interest from spring blossom through to autumn colour. They also provide dappled shade to the woodland underplanting comprising Oakleaf Hydrangea, Lastreopsis, Hellebores, Pratia and Libertia.
