Ponsonby courtyard
Auckland, NZ
Public Garden
This courtyard garden is located within the centre of a commercial space in Auckland’s Three Lamps. The garden provides a green oasis with numerous places to sit immersed in planting as well as a meandering thoroughfare off the main street. Planting is entirely restricted to potted plants disturbed to create gathering points for larger groups and niches for individuals to read or enjoy lunch.
A mix of Olives, Fig and Cercis provide height and dappled shade. Virginia creeper is planted to cover the columns and the balcony of the first floor. The planting combines Mediterranean groundcovers with sub-tropical foliage, all species selected for their capacity to thrive in pots. Varying shades of grey and green complement the varied leaf forms to create a layered and texture rich planting scheme.
